Educational Lineage

Visual Work

For a visual representation of my educational lineage I was initially working with transparent layers on a pie chart. I wanted something that could show how experiences are linked together and build off of each other. Later I switched to using a mobile as a way to show balance as well.  As the mobile developed it got out of balance, as we do in life, and things shift back as new elements are added.  In the end I moved away from the mobile to a presentation board with 3D craft objects and photos mounted.  I’ve learned from traditional school settings, teachers and artists - each with something unique to offer. I added visual representations of the most influential points in my lineage with photos and craft pieces similar to the kind I made as a kid and notes on the types of teaching and learning I experienced. The diorama is my high school with factory smoke stacks to represent the factory like settings of some schools. The yellow flowers are hibiscus, the Hawaii State flower, where I learned in a more Social Constructivism style about culture and history. The collage is by Hannah Hoch, with a cut out of my friends mom placed in the center representing the 'New Woman' in my life who taught me so much, this also connected to my studies at WSU where I wrote about women in the Dada art movement. When I put it all together on the mobile I realized the concept was not working as well as I hoped, the heavier craft items were collapsing the mobile in on itself. I wanted to use playful art mediums so I moved towards collage instead which still conveys the playfulness of children's art mediums as a tool for learning.

I sketched out a pie chart. I wanted to make parts of my education able to overlap and move around the chart on tracing paper. I also thought about using a quilt influenced design.

I started with a basic outline, moved to a pie chart, and then I wanted to show that my education, like for so many, was not linear or complete but layered and always expanding and growing. I wrote down some key terms from the readings and videos and placed them with what experience I felt matched with them.

I wanted to show how out of balance some of my experiences have been and how they affected my education. I also liked how the mobile brings in a reference to parenthood where I’ve personally  learned so much. In the end the mobile was not as successful as I wanted it to be and collapsed in too much,  it felt more important for me to keep the craft items as part of my concept.
